Microblogging

In the past, I’ve made my feelings about social media pretty clear. However, I do sometimes find myself wishing I could still post that great picture of my food or my dogs or that particular locale on vacation for a the untold masses to “like” and “share” and rain accolades down upon me. True, I could re-engage with Facebook or Instagram, but I have been off of both for almost a year now and, if I’m being honest, I think it has helped my mental health. I could also hop on Twitter which is the definition of “microblogging.” But I think Twitter is probably worse than FB or IG, so … no thanks. And I can’t even put into words my intense lack of desire to use Tiktok or Snapchat, so those are a no-go for me too.

So… maybe I’ll randomly pop on here from my smart phone to upload my silly photos for the sake of scratching the social media itch without having to actually engage in what very well may be one of the worst things to ever be unleashed upon mankind.

And since the nature of microblogging is short and to the point, I’ll stop here and share the photo that I took this morning. I bought a new coffee mug from Hobby Lobby, and I love it, and I want to share it. So here it is:

The joke is on them though, because, while they had it on deep clearance, I would have happily paid more than this cup is worth. I am a TMNT weirdo. I love the Turtles! So, I now drink my coffee out of a mug big enough to hold 1/3 of a pot. That, my friends, is what I call “Turtle Power!”

But real quick, and then I will keep the rest of these as true “microblogs.” What does something like this have to do with being a pastor? I’ll tell you … much like reading fiction, we all have to find something that we can take a little bit of joy in. I LOVE what I do as a pastor. I enjoy studying Scripture and working through difficult texts and putting together a sermon manuscript.

But I also love the Turtles. And Stargate. And mowing my lawn. And Gardening. So, pastors … and especially you pastors that feel overwhelmed and on the verge of burnout. Stop, take a breather, and don’t feel guilty enjoying something other than the work of ministry. It’s okay. And, even more so, if you can find it … go watch some Ninja Turtles.
